Today we will start our final scratch project. In class you will receive a rubric for the project outline. It is very broad and you will be provided with a lot of freedom, so use it well!
After I distribute the rubric, please answer the following questions on a google doc in our shared folder. The proposal should be one page in length.
1. What type of game are you going to design (single player, 2 player)? What will be the purpose of the game?
2. What types of sprites will you use (you should include 3, one which will be original)?
3. What will be your stage(s) and backgrounds? Will you switch stages?
4. How will your control the movement of your sprites? Will there be broadcasts?
5. What will be your variable (points, score, time) and how will it be tracked?
6. Anything else important/interesting that you would like to include.

Today we will finish our Rock, Paper, Scissors, script that we started in class yesterday. If you finish early, consider adding a score keeper in your game so you can keep track of your wins and loses.
After this, you will create your own simple timer in Scratch. I will show you an example, and you are required to create your own without any help from sample programs.
Next class, you will start your final project for this unit. Begin brainstorming creative ideas for making your own Scratch game that includes variables, keeps score, etc.

Guten Tag!
Today is a exciting day in Comm Tech. We are going to create a 3 scene story in Scratch that includes speech, scene changes, broadcasts, and more.
First I will give you a demonstration of the Cat story. Then, you can go to our Rockway Scratch site and download the game and look through the script. When you have an understanding of it, I want you to create your own 3 scene script! You will have more than 1 class to finish this assignment, so add in anything extra that you think would be cool!
When you are finished, upload the game to the Scratch site and answer the following questions:
1. What is the basic outline of your story?
2. What new techniques did you learn?
3. What challenges did you face?
4. Did you make any improvements to your game? What were they?

Buongiorno!
First you will be given a demonstration of new scratch techniques: altering/animating a sprite. After these demonstrations I'd like you to create your own and show me after you have completed this.
Next, I'd like you to recreate the Monkey game I will show you in class! This game will apply new knowledge of variables, random movement, and 2 sprites! I'd like you to change the sprites, and the background. You can add in anything extra that you think would add to the game. You can download this game from the Rockway2012 site on http://scratch.mit.edu/.
1. Was there anything new in the script that you learned?
2. What did you alter and why?
3. How could you apply the knowledge you learned to your own game?

Today we will do 5 mini-assignments:
1. Create a sprite that moves to the mouse pointer
2. Make your sprite change colour when pressing the space bar
3. Make a sprite that has at least 2 different dance moves, and can dance to a beat.
Part 2:
1. Make a sprite that has a whirl effect
2. Make a ghost glide smoothly around the screen in 3 different places.
WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED:
Now that we have been studying Scratch for 2 weeks, what new things have you learned?
Do you enjoy Scratch, why or why not?
What is the most difficult part of Scratch for you?

At the beginning of class today, we will have a presentation by Alex, Bethany, and Jacob. Next, we will be introduced to the scratch website. After this we will get some practise debugging - that is, finding errors in our code and fixing them.
I will demonstrate the scratch website and you are required to make your own account. If you already have one from another year, you can use it.
You will work individually to complete the handout provided. Both partners need to hand in a completed assignment.
To download the programs:
1. Go to the Scratch website (www.scratch.mit.edu) and login to our account:
username: rockway2012
password: rockway
2. Click on "my stuff" to see the five debug programs.
3. Click on debug_1_0. Once it opens in your browser, click "Download this Project".
Work individually to fix the 5 programs. Record your solution on your assignment sheet and submit it at the end of class. If you finish early, you can continue improving projects from last class or working on your independent project.

Hello Comm-Techies and happy Friday!!
Today we don't have access to a room that is dark enough for light painting, so we'll be going over some new things today including computer programming and careers in communciations technology.
BEFORE THE PRESENTATION
Before the presentation, meet with your group and go through the photos you have taken in the last few classes. Reflect and do a mid-critique on your photos, please answer the following questions:
1. How many photos has your group completed that are "usable"?
2. Are these photos as successful as you have hoped??? Why or why not?
3. What could improve your photos?
4. Take 1 of the photos, and edit it using iphoto (if you don't have access to iphoto, speak with me). Try adjusting the constrast and exposure in the photo.
AFTER THE LESSON
Please answer the following,
1. What careers have you considered within computers/ communications technology??? (Think communications, programming, video, photography, journalism, graphic design, web design, video game design, marketing, etc. )
2. Choose one field of study, and research 3 college or university programs in Ontario that you would consider applying to and answer the following:
1.What is the name of the school and title of program?
2. How many years is the program, and what types of courses would you take?
3. Are there special requirements for entry into program? (i.e. marks, portfolio, computer/art classes?)
4. What is the price for tutition per year?

Hello,
I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend! Today we will be continuing with our final light painting assignment. Before you begin shooting, you must:
Write a proposal. This proposal must include the group members names, the title of your assignment, and a minimum 1 paragraph description of your narrative. This paragraph can include why you chose the topic, the materials you will be using (think colour), and how you will articulate your narrative.
If you are working in a group of 2, you will have 10 photos. If you are working in a group of 3, you will have 15 photos. You can include a title and a conclusion photo in this.
You must also create a series of storyboard sketches to show your idea to me.
Each group will submit 1 proposal, you must work on this together.
AFTER you have completed the above, you may begin working on your assignment!

October 26th
It's Fri-day, Fri-day!
1. If you have not finished your posts from Wednesday, please do so. Remember they must be 1 paragraph each!
2. Once you are finished, we will divide into 4 groups and begin planning for our formal light painting assignment. For this assignment, you will need to submit 10 photos within a series that create a narrative. These photos must tell a story, create a scene, or have a common connection. They could create a comic, show an object moving/growing, etc.
After you have developed an idea, your group must submit an outline of your project to me. The outline will include the group members names, the theme (1 paragraph description) and storyboard sketches of your project outline.
3. Once you are finished and have submitted the outline to me, you can sign out a camera and attempt light painting during the day time! Try adjusting your camera's shutter speed, aperture, and ISO sensitivity. When you return, write a 1 paragraph description of your experience.

Hello everyone!
For the first part of today, please submit your slow shutter speed assignments to me. Either send it to me in google docs, or e-mail me the link to whoever's blog it is on. Next, finish all the blog posts about light painting that was from Friday.
If you are done the light painting posts, please upload the best photos you have taken in this class so far to your FlickR account. You should have at least 10 photos uploaded. After this, pick 3 different photos from to comment on (from 3 different people). Describe what you think is successful about the photo (think elements and principles of design!).
After you have done all this, find 1 youtube video that you think describes light painting in a easy way. Post the link to the video on your blog and describe why you thought the video was helpful.
After this, we will begin our first light painting activity in class as a group!!! At the end of the period, I will post the photos we created together on our class blog.

Hello and welcome to Wednesday!!!
Today we will be covering a few different things in our class as we catch up and prepare to begin our light painting assignments!
For the first part of today, please:
-finish uploading your photos from your slow/fast shutter speed photos.
-Complete the google doc with all the required information (see Monday's blog post)
-upload your best 3 photos to FlickR. If you STILL haven't posted your FlickR username to the google doc, DO SO
Once you are finished this work, please do the following:
Use the web to research, and answer the following questions. Be sure to use complete sentences, your spell checker, and include a lot of detail in your responses.
Include a reference for your sources at the end of each question.
1. What is stock photography?
2. What are three sources online for stock photography? What is the price, approximately, per photo?
3. What is iStockPhoto.com? Describe how the company works, and how much a user pays for each photo.
4. What does "royalty-free" mean? What other products (other than photos) does iStockPhoto.com offer for sale?
5. Have you ever used stock photography?
AFTER THE LESSON
Now that you have seen examples of light painting, please answer the following:
1. How does light painting work?
2. What equipment do you need for light painting?
3. What are some potential problems you could have with light painting.
4. Find a cool example of light painting online and post it to your blog. What about this photo do you like? Do you think photo was done in traditional light painting technique or on photoshop?

October 15th
Friday we had a short demonstration with the tripods on capturing movement with a slow shutter speed. At the beginning of class, I will do a short demonstration with the cameras again to refresh some of your memories. Today we will continue with this topic with a small assignment:
You will work with a partner (or individually) to shoot a total of 6 photos. You must capture 3 different images using a fast shutter speed and a slow shutter speed. A slow shutter speed would be anything longer than 1/2 a second, and a fast would be 1/250 and higher. You MUST shoot in manual for this assignment, and you will need to adjust the aperture accordingly to insure an accurately exposed photo (i.e. not too bright, not too dark). You will need to take multiple photos of each image to get the perfect photo.
1. Choose 3 images you would like to capture. Ideas are the stream from a water fountain, close-up action of a ping-pong game, a shot of hands typing on a keyboard, a high school musical inspired jump scene, etc. The most successful movement shots will have some still and something moving in the photo.
2. Shoot the photo with a fast shutter speed. Then shoot a second photo with a slow shutter speed.
3. Create a google doc and upload the photos into the doc. Below or beside each photo, tell me the f stop and shutter speed for each photo. ex. f/8 1/30 f/3 1/2500
4. Upload the photos and submit 1 assignment to me through google docs. Be sure both partners names are on the assignment.

Hello and happy Friday!
For the first part of today, please finish up the work from Wednesday. You were asked to edit photos, post your FlickR user name on the google docs file, and to go to the National Geographic website and do some research.
AFTER THE LESSON
I would like you to sign-out a camera and a tripod with a partner and try some of the techniques that were demonstrated! For this, you will need to set your camera to a very slow shutter peed (i.e. 15s) and try capturing a photo of movement. Have fun with this and experiement with different movements. Perhaps one person can stand still, the other moves around, etc.

October 10th
Hello and welcome!
Today we will be writing out first test (yay). If you are reading this before the test, best of luck! If you are reading this after, congratulations on finishing.
AFTER THE TEST
Part A
After the test, please complete the following:
Use Iphoto to enhance the following photos. Edit each photo, 3 different ways. Do each photo:
1. In a "normal" but enhanced way. I.e. sharpness, contrast, enhanced colours, etc.
2. An "effect" that you think looks interesting (sepia, b & w, faded colour, tints, etc.)
3. Crop the photo to create a more successful composition (doesn't have to be rule of thirds but it might help).
After you are finished, upload the photos to your blog and title the post "photo editing".
Now choose 1 of your own photos to edit in an interesting way and post it on your blog with an explanation of what you changed. Explain how you made the photo more successful with the new edit (think elements of design, composition, etc.)
Part B
After you have finished part A, please upload your elements of design photos onto FlickR (you can include any other photos you've taken outside of school or within school if it was for a different project). If you still haven't provided your FlickR username within the group Google Doc, do so. Take the time to check out the art that your classmates are creating!
Once you have finished, go to www.nationalgeographic.com and find their "photo of the day" site. Look through the archive of photos of the day (gallery). On your blog, list three photos that you thought were particularly interesting/successful. Please include the title of the photograph, the name of the photographer, and what the date was when it was title "photo of the day". Please explain in depth (1 paragraph each), why you thought the photo was successful. Try to use the language from class, i.e. elements of design, exposure, DOF, composition, etc.

October 3
Hello and welcome to Wednesday,
Just a reminder that today is the last class for the week ( no classes this Friday and Monday is a holiday). That means that after today, you won't have this class for another week! Sad, I know.
1. Today we will be doing a review for our quiz which will be on Wednesday, October 10th. There is no reason that everyone in this class can't do well! Today I want you to do the review sheet for the quiz that I will be handing out in class. After you are finished, show it to me.
2. Go to our class Google Docs folder and share your Flickr user name with the group so that we can view each others photos. There will be a file in the folder labeled "Flickr".
3. Once you are finished the review sheet and sharing , you can sign-out a camera and we will try round 2 of our aperture lesson. The range of aperture is quite small on our cameras, but I still think this is a valuable lesson and that the DOF will be more visible once we are working with our images on the screen. I would like you to shoot 3 different objects/settings with 3 different aperture settings. I.e. a shallow depth, a mid-range depth, and a deep depth. In total you will have 9 photos. You are welcome to work with a partner for this.

Hello and welcome to October!
While you are waiting for the lesson to begin, answer the following questions as a blog post:
What is the origin of the word photography. What does it mean?
What is the ISO on a camera and why would we, as photographers, want to be aware of this?
Finally, try to open iphoto. If you have any issues, please let me know.
AFTER THE LESSON-------
Understanding Resolution
Read this post on Resolution by photographer Frank Phillips, and then answer the questions below on your blog.
Please cut and paste and questions into your blog first.

For the first few minutes, please submit your assignments to me if you DO NOT have to use iphoto. DO NOT OPEN IPHOTO!!!!!! If you must open iphoto, ask if you can go to the loop in the library to use the OLD OPERATING SYSTEM.
AFTER THE LESSON
1. Find an example of a photo with multiple exposures and post it onto your blog.
2. Use google to discover how to use the manual option for our cameras in class, the Canon sx150. Once you have figured this out, demonstrate it with the camera and show me.
3. Please respond to the following questions:
What is the role of aperture in creating the depth of field?
What do you think the purpose would be in manipulating the depth of field?
Do you prefer a shallow or a deep depth of field? Why?
4. Find an example of a photo that uses a shallow depth of field that you think established a certain "mood". What is the mood in the photo, i.e. dramatic, etc.
5. Go out and play with the manual settings for this camera and take a minimum of 6 photos with a range of Depth of Field. If possible, shoot your photos outdoors to avoid "camera shakes". We'll talk about this concept next class!

Hello!
The first half of class you will have to edit your photos that you took on Monday. Please take the next few minutes to edit your photos, choose your BEST photos that you would like to send to me. Create a new google doc within our shared folder and insert your images into the document with a short description (1-2 sentences) about why this photo represents said Element. This assignment will be due at the end of today so please work efficiently on this. If you have finished this, please upload your photos onto your flickr account so that we can share our photos with each other on Friday. If you still don't have a flickr account, you are very behind so please look back into the older posts to see what you have missed.

Hello and happy Monday,
Today will be a work period on our first official photography assignment. For the assignment, you will be required to submit a photo for each of the following elements of design/ photography techniques. Each person will need to submit their own, if you are working with a partner you will need to submit 2 photos per element. Here is the list:
-line
-complimentary/contrasting colour
-analogous/harmonizing colour
-shape (like a 2D object)
-form (like a 3D object)
-texture
-space
-pattern or symmetry
Please note that you will be marked on your representation for each of the elements. If you are confused as to what the element is, please clarify. Be sure to shoot multiple examples of each so that you have more to choose from. After you return, you can upload your photos to iphoto, edit the photos, and then submit them in our joint folder. With each photo, also submit a short description about why this photo represents the element (1 to 2 sentences).

Hello tech-savy folks,
1. Please check your Rockway gmail for a e-mail from me. There are many of you who are still behind. Catch up on any work you are missing for homework. Check your blog for comments from me.
2. Continue with the creation of your Flickr account. Upload the photos that you took that represent the rule of thirds to your account. E-mail me with your Flickr account so I can view your photos. My flickr account is msmatthews2012 but you can send your Flickr account name to traceym@student.rockway.ca.
AFTER THE LESSON (please wait until after my presentation to start this)
Part One:
Use Google Image Search to find high-resolution examples of photos that use the following compositional techniques (1 photo for each):
Note: Your photos must be at least 1024x768 in resolution.
Part Two:
Find a partner to work with.
As a group, take 20 minutes to take photos that demonstrate the compositional techniques listed above. You may walk around the school but must NOT disturb any classes! You must be back by 3:10 at the latest.
Return to class and download your photos. Have one group member post them on their blog with an explanation of which technique the photo demonstrates. Be sure to include your partner's name in your post. Use to iphoto enhance your photo.

Hello and welcome back!
Today we will begin our first theory day. There is a lot of theory behind photography so it will be important for you to stay on top of your work. The first thing I would like you to do today is:
1. Check our shared google docs folder for a message from me. It will be sent as a google docs file. The e-mail was down this weekend so this is how I sent you a message. The majority of you have still not sent me a link to your blog. You have had plenty of time to do this, please catch up a.s.a.p.
2. Catch up on all of the work from Friday including finding a camera tutorial for the cameras we use in this class.
3. Upload your photos to iphoto. Feel free to explore with iphoto and choose 3 photos that you would like to submit to me for marking. It is important that all 3 of these photos show the rule of thirds. If you worked with a partner, please send me all 6 photos each.
4. Set up a Flickr account. Use your school gmail address to create your account. Flickr is a great tool for sharing photos. Explore Flickr and discover its possibilities. Please list on your blog 5 new things that you learned about Flickr. You can choose to share privately with only those who you give permission to (our class) or publicly.
LESSON
5. AFTER the lesson, please continue with the creation of your Flickr account.
6. Find an example of an aperture/ shutter speed exposure chart and post it on your blog with a reference.
7. Find out what the B and T settings are in relation to a shutter speed on your camera. Post your findings on the blog.
8. Research what a light metre is and what a gray card is. What are these used for? Post your findings on the blog.

September 14th!
Hello comm tech folks and happy Friday!
Today will be our first day shooting, we will be going outside shortly. But first.....
I'd like you to do the following:
1) Check your blog for comments from me. Correct anything that needs to be corrected.
2) Finish the iphoto work from Wednesday, i.e. cropping the 3 photos in 2 different ways to show the rule of thirds.
3) While you're waiting for our lesson to begin, use Google Image search to find 2 photos that DON'T follow the "Rule of Thirds". Avoid "head shots" or photos that simply have one object in the center of the frame (those are too obvious). Please limit your search to photos that are Larger than 1024x768. You can set this option on the left side-bar of the Google Image Search page.
4) Look up a tutorial on using the Canon PowerShot SX150 IS. These are the cameras we will be using this year and they have lots of possibilities.

While you're waiting for our lesson to begin, use the web to research the "Rule of Thirds". What is this concept and how does it apply to photography?
Post your answer on your blog (at least a paragraph). DO NOT just cut and paste, and provide a reference for your source of information.
AFTER THE LESSON
Part One:
You are going to practise using the rule of thirds by CROPPING photos and improving their composition.
1. Click on each thumbnail to download the full size version of each photo.
2. Use iPhoto to crop each photo in TWO DIFFERENT WAYS using the rule of thirds.
3. Upload your finished photos to your blog with the title "Rule of Thirds".
Part Two:
1. Find two great examples of the Rule of Thirds in photos on the web. Post them on your blog (with references) and explain why they follow this rule.
2. If you are finished, find someone in the class who you can HELP.
